Nature Trail

One of my favorite places to walk is the Lefurge Woods Nature Preserve in Ypsilanti, MI.

I grew up not far from here but didn’t discover the trails until fairly recently, last summer, even though I passed it countless times while driving into Ypsilanti to visit my mother. I’ve always liked nature trails but I guess I didn’t realize this place was anything other than a quick overlook into wetlands. In fact the preserve has two parts one with longer trails and a hill and another spot about a half mile away shown in this picture.

I think one day on our way to Ypsilanti my youngest said something about the large hill with a small parking area mentioning it would be a great place to fly a kite. Shortly after we purchased the first of many kites and set off to the hill. It took a few kites but we managed several visits to the preserve with successful flights most times.

I’ve spent many hours here with my kids flying kites, walking around exploring and sometimes by myself where I would walk and think. I guess I discovered this trail during a time when things started to really change and I needed to think often. I wish the snow would melt and the warm air would return so I could go back.

Frozen Lake

Completing an inspection of a condo on Ford Lake in Ypsilanti Michigan I chatted with the buyer on the balcony for a bit. We talked about the lake and what a great view these units have. The condos are perfectly situated right on the lake and each unit has it’s own boat dock.

I’ve performed several inspections in this neighborhood and each time tell myself I should own one of these units.

The thing is this portion of the lake is quite busy in the summer months with boats, jet-skis and all manner of water sports. I’m more of a small quiet lake kind of guy.

Still the sunsets are always nice here.

It seems like each winter I think about how much time I didn’t spend outdoors doing the things I enjoy.
I can’t complain about the amount of time I spent outdoors over the summer this year. My visits to the LeFurge Woods Nature Preserve and Matthaei Botanical Gardens were frequent.

The photo above was from this fall at the LeFurge Woods Nature Preserve just a couple miles from where I grew up and less than 10 miles from where I now live. I spent hours over the summer here walking around, flying a kite with my daughter and at times just sitting for a while to think.

Graffiti in Ypsilanti

There’s a bridge over the Huron River in Ypsilanti Michigan that connects Riverside park to Frog Island park. Under the bridge there’s a section that gets a new decoration every few months.

The previous decoration was the image of a gentleman sitting down to dinner with his head being the main course, very odd. I will post it later.

Little Yellow Building

There’s a little yellow building in Ypsilanti that has become my favorite place to eat with excellent food, one of those little “mom and pop” places that you would probably not visit without a recommendation. It’s not just my favorite place but at least two of my kids call it their favorite too. The building is quite old and has been a restaurant for years though it operated under a different name when I was a kid living in Ypsilanti. Actually for a while it was owned by a family I knew but I only visited a couple times never really getting into the food much just more of a visit for us to tease our friend working there. We all grew up and I took a course that pulled me away from things, friends, those places and so no.

Forward many years later, perhaps 25, and a friend mentioned this little restaurant in Ypsilanti that serves really good Chinese food but that’s small and really not fancy inside. His description was something like, “it’s so small you would easily drive past were it not painted bright yellow.” Indeed this building is merely a speck squeezed in between larger red brick and stone businesses so without that yellow paint you really wouldn’t even notice it.The sign out front is faded and parking down a tight alley is limited giving it even more of a mysterious look.  After talking about the history of the restaurant and telling my friend I knew the place but had not been there in years I decided to give it a try and to take my family or at least any one of them that would go with me.

The first visit didn’t leave a good impression really and in fact I know at least some of us didn’t care for it at all. I knew next time I saw my friend Dean I would ask him what his comparison is because honestly the food was nothing special. Telling him about it he asked me what I got and I told him the typical American Chinese food you get anywhere, sweet and sour deep fried stuff. That was the problem he said, “they do really really good traditional food but not so much the American variety.” So I decided to try again but this time he would go too so as to show me the way and I am glad I did, wow really good. So I could go on and on about the place but that’s not really why I decided to write this blog.

After that second visit I knew I would be a regular and would try to get my family to go too which didn’t go as planned but my boys love the place and we go there often, just last night actually. The more we went the more we looked forward to it and it became kind of our thing to do. Go to Hidden Dragon, hit up the food co-op for goodies and then the park for a walk. This is one of the things we do together and I always look forward to it picturing they will one day do the same  even at the same places while telling their kids how dad always took them here. Who knows if that will happen but I like to think it will.  Whatever the future holds I know I will have these memories forever and will continue to do my best making more memories with those I love and for that I consider myself a lucky man.

Favorite places

Yesterday I had some time to take a couple of the kids out to some of our favorite places in Ypsilanti. When we go to Ypsilanti we either go to Hidden Dragon restaurant for excellent traditional Chinese food which I'm glad all the kids but one likes. Or we head over to Sidetracks in Depot Town for great all American food. Really it's hard to pick my favorite but I tend to spend more time at HD. After eating we always go to the co-op for treats to be enjoyed down at the Riverside Park. Our trip yesterday was actually pretty nasty with a recent deposit of a couple inches of slush. Almost immediately our feet were soaked from walking in it but I was determined to make it to the bridge. My thought was once we got under the bridge it would be a littler dryer and it was even if just a little. We sipped on soda and ate pineapple for a few minutes before the cold got to us. One the way back to the truck Audrey fell but didn't drop the pineapple, what a champ. Next time I will be better prepared with boots, hats and gloves. Actually it would have been fun if we were dressed for it.
