UNIDENTIFIED SEA CREATURE WASHES ASHORE IN MICHIGAN!

Beach CreatureSo the heading is a bit dramatic and a lie. This “creature” is my youngest son though sometimes he acts only partially human.

This photo was taken over the summer on the shores of Lake Michigan in Ludington. We covered him in sand while discussing Creepshow and suggesting he hold his breath. It sounds morbid I know but it was of course all in good (guy) humor.

In truth there was less than a foot of sand over him allowing for an easy escape. The end result looked more like something washed up on the shore rather than a scene from the movie.

Ludington Michigan

One of my favorite summer vacation destinations is Ludington Michigan in the west side of the state. I’ve been visiting Ludington since childhood when my father or uncle would take us kids north. There’s plenty to do in town but it’s the beach that brings me back often.

There’s a great family park/beach right on Lake Michigan called Stearns Park & Beach  where most people go to swim, picnic and walk out to the North Breakwater Lighthouse . If you’re lucky you might even see the S.S Badger on its way across Lake Michigan to Wisconsin.

I’m more of a private beach person who prefers the sounds of seagulls and waves to the sounds of a crowd. I’ve never swam at the city park beach because I’ve always known about another “secret” spot a few miles down from the park that often provides just what I am looking for. Of course you have to go on the right days to ensure you have a large stretch of beach to yourselves. In my experience it’s during the weekdays when most people are working or gone home after a fun weekend that you get a good chance at having a large stretch of beach.

This year we visited during the weekend and into the week so I knew we would have a large area to ourselves if we visited the beach on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The photo below shows the beach goes on for miles.

Little Sable Point Lighthouse

More vacation photos from this past summer. These were taken in Little Sable Point, MI home of the Little Sable Point Lighthouse. The lighthouse was opened this year allowing you, for a small fee, to walk up the winding stairs to the top.

Over the years I’ve been here at least a dozen times but never had the opportunity to enter the lighthouse.

The beach here is always occupied but never packed, at least when I’ve been there. Being an amazing beach area I’m always surprised at the lack of swimmers but it’s nice if you like an area without a huge crowd.

Mother Goose and Goslings

Mother Goose and Chicks

Taken at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor Michigan over the summer.

These goslings were in tight formation careful not to get left behind.

The gardens are a place for wildlife to exist without disruption other than curious humans who point and take photos. I’ve seen snakes, deer, all manner of birds, turtles, fish, plenty of insects and this summer a fox.

Clay

I’ve always been impressed with how clear the water is in Lake Michigan on a calm day. This photo was taken under water while on vacation up in Good Hart. Clear water can be misleading though when you look down making things appear closer than they are.

As the tide goes in and out the shore along this beach brought silt in which settled forming long paths of clay. When following these “paths” it almost looks like ancient roads from a lost city. Some portions of the clay are small enough to carry to the surface.

Stones

The stones appear to be almost within arms reach however they’re at least 10 feet down.

We made several attempts to bring stones to the surface, sometimes with success but often times with no luck. The thing is it’s not hard to reach them them but once down there they are bigger than you think and trying to bring one to the surface is no easy task.

Sunset on Lake Michigan

This photo is from our Summer vacation in Good Hart Michigan this past August. I miss warm summer nights and this place up north.

I’ve been contemplating getting away the past month or so but things have not worked out that way. Other than taking a flight far south there’s nowhere I can go within a few hours distance by car that’s warm enough.

Lefurge Woods Nature Preserve

It seems like each winter I think about how much time I didn’t spend outdoors doing the things I enjoy.
I can’t complain about the amount of time I spent outdoors over the summer this year. My visits to the LeFurge Woods Nature Preserve and Matthaei Botanical Gardens were frequent.

The photo above was from this fall at the LeFurge Woods Nature Preserve just a couple miles from where I grew up and less than 10 miles from where I now live. I spent hours over the summer here walking around, flying a kite with my daughter and at times just sitting for a while to think.

Last year while on vacation in Arizona I went on several hikes. This photo was taken at Thunderbird Conservation Park in Glendale. It was my third visit to Arizona and as always I was impressed with the wild life around the trails.
