Highland Cemetery

 Highland Cemetery

Thinking back and trying to picture myself as a kid running around this place with friends. Hiding behind the larger grave markers and laughing. Yesterday we drove past, as we often do, so I decided to visit Ty’s grave site then circle around to the back part where we would hang out in the 80’s. This is the older part of the cemetery where nothing has changed for years so it’s easy to picture myself as a kid playing that game where we would try to find the oldest grave marker. I know my kids have heard it over and over but it’s just what I do, thinking back always and telling stories about how it used to be.

Runoff

Runoff in the UP to Lake Superior

The runoff water was really cold but not as cold as Lake Superior. After walking in it for a bit I thought about where it came from. Up top on the road and further up to more woods and hills. The water was brownish from the tannins collected along the way.

Lake Superior

Last week I headed up, way UP until I reached the end at Lake Superior. The water wasn’t as cold as I remembered it being years past but there was this weird algae collecting at the shore. The color of the algae reminded me of radiator fluid.

The trip wasn’t long-planned but more of a last-minute one as is my typical way of going on a vacation. Usually it’s not a problem to find lodging when I just want to go but then trying to do that on a holiday weekend proved to be difficult. My first choice for a getaway was on the west side of the state where I go several times a year  but my favorite place to stay was booked. Searching online I found it difficult to find anything so I decided to look into the Upper Peninsula and as luck would have it I found the perfect place right on the lake. Good memories were made.

Time

I’ll remember this weekend for a long time. Spending g time with friends and family is something I cherish. Now that the day is winding down I find myself alone for a few hours. It’s during times like this that I find a quiet place to think.

Lost and Found

Cleaning out a part of the basement I found a box full of photographs from the mid to late 90’s. Some of the pictures I never even looked at. The year 1997 was one of the best years of my life. That’s when my first child was born.

Nostalgia

I don’t think it’s healthy to spend a lot of time looking back and thinking about how things used to be. Sure there are lessons to be learned from the past but what’s done is done. The things happening right now can determine the future so that’s where we should focus our attention. Still I find myself reflecting on the past and how things have changed over the years. When I revisit places from the past, especially those I have not seen in years, I always hope they look the same as I remember them.

Almost twenty years ago I passed this farm each day on my way to work. It became a weird habit of mine to try in capture as much detail of it in my mind as possible. Perhaps that’s why I remembered so many details when I drove past it a couple weeks ago. I can say this place has not changed at all in all those years and I was glad to see something remain the same.

Quietly Walking

Two or three months ago I was walking this path at the botanical gardens and saw a coyote. Actually I only saw part of a coyote as it ran into this field of thick weeds. When I’m alone here I try to be as quiet as possible in hopes of seeing a deer or other animal.

Sunny day at the park

It’s almost the end of October and still we are getting decent days with sunshine. Yesterday I went to the park with a friend and relaxed for a few hours by the water. This was a great way to end my weekend. The only thing I guess I would complain about were the black fly. If you look to the left of the sun you can see a black dot, that’s a fly. I wonder how many more days like this we will get this year before the real cold comes?
