out of town

For the first time in I don’t know how many years I was able to go out of town for Thanksgiving. I’ve always had to deal with co-workers with high seniority who seem to think it’s acceptable to take every big holiday. With Thanksgiving being on a Thursday I’ve always had to work Friday. Going out of town for the day never seems like a good idea even if only a couple hours north. I’m not sure what the plans are for Christmas but if I want to I can go out of town. The down side is I don’t get any paid holidays time or paid time in general. A small price to pay when I don’t have to deal with office politics.

I’ve always thought living for the weekend was such a waste but impossible for me to fight against. When you have to report in and bow to the needs of self preserving superiors it’s hard not to think only of the weekend. Sure the weekends have lost that magic but once again I don’t mind. I’m not saying this is like a permanent vacation because being self employed brings a new set of problems. Punching a clock for the same check is secure. Not knowing how much you will make next week is not.

When I was still working a regular FT job I always imagined how nice it would be to take a vacation, when I want it, and not be limited to what my employer gives me. It’s true I can take time when I want it but once again there’s that issue with not getting paid when I don’t work. With the regular FT job I got a week off but it was paid. Now I take a week off and the money stops. I always wondered why other home inspectors talked about taking a vacation for the first time in six years and now I understand.
